From
The BC Game:
Caleb, the Hokies, and the Hurd completed
an astounding perfect regular season on Friday evening!
-
Caleb deftly held on one field goal and five
extra points, finishing the season with a remarkable 100% hold percentage.
At least one of the snaps was high, and had to be skillfully brought down
and held.
-
This helped the Hokies to win their 11th consecutive
game, and set up a probable match-up with Florida State in the national
championship game in New Orleans on January 4th. Can you believe
it?!
-
The Hurd was represented at every Hokie game
this year. Jon, Mike, Heather, and Larry each made it to every single
game, home and away. And we'll be in New Orleans on the 4th!
The original Hurd members of section 5 managed
to catch up with Caleb and his fiancee Courtney on the field after the
game, in the middle of all the celebratory madness. We presented
them with the Hurd for Heisman signs and talked for a minute. Hopefully
we'll have some pictures up soon - whenever the film gets developed and
we can scan 'em in. Amazingly enough, he didn't seem at all frightened
by a random bunch of crazy Hokie fans who picked him to be the object of
their adoration. We sincerely appreciate the great response
we've gotten from Caleb, Courtney, the Hurd family, Shayne Graham and everyone
else who has contributed to the campaign.
Channel 8 in Richmond did air the piece on
Caleb and the Hurd during their Tech football special. Caleb, Shayne,
and coach Beamer were all interviewed for the segment. Sound clips
from the piece are now in the Hurd
Audio Archive.
Caleb and the rest of the seniors were recognized
in a ceremony before the game. We held up little signs (so they wouldn't
be confiscated) spelling out "Caleb's Hurd" and he saw them and pointed
our direction as he ran onto the field.
Because of some of us arriving in the
'burg late, and the inclimate weather before the game we didn't get a chance
to tailgate with the Hurd clan, but we appreciate the invitation
anyway.
From
the Temple Game:
Once again Caleb was perfect on all eight
Shayne Graham extra points and both of his field goals in the Hokies' 62-7
annihilation of the Temple Owls.
Shayne got to kick off late in the game, as
the second stringers were in and he's the backup man on the kickoff team.
We were a little disappointed that the wind wasn't strong enough for Caleb
to be called on to hold the ball on the tee.
Caleb will be featured on the Channel 8 News
sports report from Richmond this Wednesday, the 24th. Hopefully the
Hurd will get a big boost from the coverage! Any members of the Hurd
in the greater Richmond metropolitan area are encouraged to tune in and
tape the game - we're trying to get someone to send us a copy, but the
more people that tape it, the better the chances. Any good sound
bites will be posted right here.
Caleb is one away from the Tech record
for extra point holds in a season, which is 53, by whoever Caleb's predecessor
was in 1995. (You know, that famous guy who held for Ryan Williams...)
He also broke the Tech record for holds on successful extra points in a
season, which was 48, by that same guy. Thanks to Doug McDaniel for
the spreadsheet of Shayne/Caleb's career stats.
From
the Miami Game Week:
"The only obligation which I have a right
to assume is to do at any time what I think right."
- Henry David Thoreau, Civil Disobedience
With the sprit of Thoreau in mind on Saturday
night, the leaders of The Hurd performed their own small act of civil disobedience
in support of our cause. The Lane Stadium staff was on the hunt for
signs before the game. No reason was given, and at all previous games
they'd had no problem with our Hurd for Heisman sign. But they told
us to take it down this time. But when a cause is as strong as ours,
mere stadium staff cannot stand in our way. So following the Hokies'
first extra point we held up the two signs. No one said a thing.
But after our next placekick, one of the sign Nazis came around and confiscated
the incredible "Caleb's Hurd" sign that Glenn Hurd had given us to hang
up. Mike tried to convince him otherwise, but when it looked like
the security guards would be called upon, we were forced to capitulate.
But the damage was short-lived. Although we didn't get to display
the sign during the game, we retrieved it from the tyrannical staff member
after the game, to be hung another day!

Another week, another indescribable
Hokie victory! Caleb was once again a crucial part of the Hokies'
43-10 shellacking of No. 19 Miami.
-
Caleb successfully held on all five of
Shayne Graham's field goal attempts, including his near-miss from 59 yards.
This represents his new career long hold. What other holder could
perform from such a prodigious distance?
-
He also held on all five extra point attempts.
This included Shayne's Big East record 97th consecutive PAT.
-
Glenn Hurd, as mentioned in the headlines
above, gave us their huge "Caleb's Hurd 91" sign before the game.
We would have hung it proudly next to ours, but Tech banned all signs and
banners from the game.
The Gameday guys from ESPN discussed
the game winning field goal from the WVU game, including some praise for
Caleb. Download this wav file and listen to
Lee Corso explain all the facets of a sucessful Virginia Tech field
goal.
WVU Game highlights:
Tech trails, 20-19, 0:05
on the clock... Here's the snap, HURD HOLDS, the kick is up, it's
long enough, it's good!!!! Tech Wins!! Tech Wins!!
As all of you already know, Caleb held
on the dramatic, game-winning, 44-yd. field goal by Shayne Graham Saturday
night in Morgantown, WV. Check out all the highlights in news and
notes, below.
The Winning Hold
-
A perfect hold by Caleb secured the Hokies'
unbelievable victory over West Virginia Saturday night. We all sat
mouths agape with just over a minute left while the WVU players and fans
went crazy, thinking they'd beaten Tech. But QB Michael Vick ran
a masterful 2-minute drill, driving the team into position for Caleb to
work his mastery.
-
The Hurd was out in force at the game.
Jon, Mike, Larry, Heather, Troy, Lynn, and Chrissy were all in the endzone
bleachers. Brother Glenn Hurd and the rest of the Hurd clan had a
giant "Caleb's Hurd 91" banner! It was incredible!!! We could
read it all the way across the stadium.
-
Caleb also held perfectly on Shayne Graham's
other field goal and his two extra points.
-
As far as we know, all the members of the
Hurd escaped Mountaineer Field unscathed, but during the wild celebration
after the game a disgruntled WVU fan threatened bodily harm if we hung
the Hurd for Heisman sign over the railing in "his" section.
I'd be bitter, too, but that's a little bit much...
There's a great picture of Caleb celebrating
the victory on the Excite
web site here.
From before the WVU game:
Look for the Hurd
at the WVU game. We'll be there with the sign, trying to avoid the flying
moonshine bottles...
50+ people joined
the Hurd today! Thanks to our Texas area recruitment coordinator,
Terry Potyk.
The site was mentioned
on the Hokiecentral.com
Hotline Notes page. Radio guys Bill Roth and Mike Burnop
joked about the site with Frank Beamer. They also mentioned the often-overlooked
fact that Caleb is the backup long snapper on punts. Let's see Shaun
Alexander or Joe Hamilton try that...
There is a mention
of The Hurd in the latest Hokie Huddler. We haven't seen it
yet, but details will be posted as soon as we do.
Marc Connolly was
interviewed about his article on 950 AM from Utica, NY on 10/27.
We're still trying to find a transcript or details on what was aired.
Hurd members Jon
Wilt, Mike Abbott, Larry O'Dell, Heather Kennedy, JP Petitjean, and the
Hurd for Heisman sign were in attendance at the victory at Pitt on Saturday
night. Any other Hurd Members there? Let us know with an email.
